After collecting so many nice rocks, some of us develop a keen interest in geology.
Some members have taken Geology courses at El Camino College, in nearby Torrance. You may have to start with GEO101, afterwards you can take courses with exciting field trips to CA Central Coast, Anza Borrego etc.
Occasionally, we have workshops at the club Lapidary Shop.
On Tuesday Evenings,  Anthony F. when present, can teach you how to make a cabochon in about ½ hour using the Grundke method.
Lapidary Shop instructors, and senior members will gladly suggest or demonstrate various techniques.

2) Educational Resources for Schools

Educational Liason, Dolores Dace (a retired ed.aide for 27 years and author) has scheduled as requested, lectures on earth sciences for first through seventh graders at Culver City USD Schools, such as El Rincon  and Willow Elementary Schools.

Our current president, Rick Shaffer, has been a strong supporter of youth activities, and encouraged club members to participate.

Members have contributed mineral specimens. Recently, the club purchased a number of mineral educational kits for this purpose.
Dolores, in the past, has made kits available to schools at our yearly July Fiesta of Gems.
On the right, you can see a picture of  Assistant Superintendent, Juvenis Laura, of the Culver City Unified School District accepting a $ 1,000 donation from CCR&MC, at our July 2009, Fiesta of Gems.

3) Youth Activities; Scouts Earth Science Merit Badge Programs.

Chair Person Ellen Moe, has for many years monitored the most popular youth station at our Fiesta of Gems.
As visitors enter the Auditorium, they are treated to exciting mineral discoveries, a wheel of fortune, prizes, tumbled rocks, etc.
She also collects mineral specimens during the year that are used for educational purposes.{click to see pictures}.

Gary Mitchell, former club president is a high adventure leader for local boy scout troop 50. He teaches backpacking and mountaineering skills to the boys at the same time sharing his knowledge of geology and rock hounding.

Anthony F. has provided an introduction to minerals at the show to various scout packs, geared towards obtaining the Earth Science merit badge.
He then experimented, with great success on field trips for youth and family.
At the Omya mine two geologists gave a presentation, followed by crystal collecting.
At Stoddard Wells there was camping, mineral identification and a hike.
Anthony is now assembling a collection of Western States minerals , that can be used to gain a more in depth knowledge of : geology, crystals, fossils, and specific mineral groups.
You can contact him if your organization has an interest in a customized program.
