July Field Trip
I Didn't Know There Were Zeolites There...?
Sunday, June 22, 2003
Too hot...its just too hot. Too hot for me to lead some of you who may be faint of heart into the middle of the Mohave. So, I have two great field trips that are very close to home that will teach you a little bit about the geology of Los Angeles County.
This month we are going to take a little trip to the largest city-owned park in the world...Griffith Park. If you drive up Canyon Drive towards the Hollywood sign, you will enter Griffith Park. Be careful not to hit any french poodles or people playing the trombone for spare change. Inside this park are three old quarries. The quarries were worked for Basalt to lay down the track for the original Red Line.
Well, as we all should know by now...where there is Basalt, there are Zeolites!!! Well, these are not THAT impressive, but I have found some neat clusters of minerals and how could you not dig a specimen with a label that reads...Hollywood, California.
We will be meeting at the Clubhouse at 9:30 a.m. We should make it up to the park no later than 10:15 a.m. If you would just like to meet us there, the last parking area is the best place to meet. You should bring a rock hammer, a collecting bag, water and some sunscreen.
See you then!
