Workshop – SO YOU WANNA COLLECT SOME DESERT ROCKS! 8/22/26 10:30am-12:30pm at Culver City Scout House

A workshop focused on preparing for your first desert rockhounding trip, designed for The different types of public lands and the rules for collecting on each. We’ll cover:

  • The different types of public lands and the rules for collecting on each.
  • The plants, animals, and environmental hazards you may encounter.
  • How to find legal collecting sites and plan your route.
  • What gear to bring and how to prepare for a safe and successful trip.
  • A brief overview of staking your own mining claim. 

The workshop will last approximately two hours. The first part of the workshop will be a lecture that reviews the above. After a short intermission, we will break into groups to plan a trip to a real rockhounding location. If time allows, each group will share their trip plan with everyone. 

By the end of the workshop, you’ll know how to confidently plan and prepare for your first legal, safe, and successful rockhounding trip.

Complementary coffee and tea will be provided, and doughnut bites will be available for purchase.

Bring: A charged phone or laptop. A mug for coffee/tea. Dollars for doughnuts (optional)
