Amy Mainzer will present meteorites and bring some from the UCLA Meteorite Gallery collection. The talk will cover meteorites, where they come from, and what they tell us about our place in the universe. We’ll look at different types of meteorites and how they formed. Also, how to find them.

Professor Mainzer is an American astronomer, specializing in astrophysical instrumentation and infrared astronomy. She holds a Bachelors degree with honors in Physics, and Masters and Ph.D degrees in Astronomy.

She is a Professor at UCLA’s Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences and is Principal Investigator of the NEO Surveyor mission, an upcoming NASA infrared telescope that will find and track potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids and comets. Professor Mainzer is also the steward for the UCLA Meteorite Museum, the largest collection of meteorites on the West Coast of the United States.

The Veteran’s Memorial Multi-Purpose Room is in the back of the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium Building. When entering the parking lot from Culver Blvd. (closest to Overland Blvd.), walk to the right when facing the building. Around the corner is a sign leading to the Multi-Purpose Room, where our meetings are held.
